Saturday, July 10, Race to Hawaii Part II

Wow, last night was an experience!!! It has been 4 days now (looking forward to a shower!!) and we are in big wind and good size seas….. We are now 600 miles off California coast and have 1523 miles to go to Oahu Hawaii. We are hoping we get there by July 18th….we will see… #6 (phil) sure found the wind„,we ran all night with the shy kite, winds ~25 knots with gusts to 35, and lots of large wave action kept the drivers very busy with heavy driving all night(#1-#6) exhausted! When #1 (steve) got off my watch at 3am, he checked the AIS and we had a large freighter heading right at us, so he stayed up, and contacted the ship. He explained that we were a sailing vessel, and that we were on a collision course even at 25 miles apart. #1 asked the ship what their intentions were, and they told us to move out of their way….not easily done running 9-12 knots with the spinnaker up and the wind and waves…we turned on my AIS broadcast, and at 0440 am, #1 grabbed #4 (stuart) and told him to watch the radar and AIS until the ship passed safely by…..by 0510 #4 went to bed….. With the wind, extreme boat motion, noise, water rushing past the hull, drivers calling for sheet release!!! no one got good sleep, everyone woke up blurry eyed, but happy about the great run we had, of 188 miles in the past 24 hours. Everyone did an exceptional job during last nights extreme weather, and today they are all very proud of themselves, as they should be. #2 (Connie) cooked egg mcmuffins for breakfast, and with coffee all was well with the world! Sun is out, so are shorts, hats and sunscreen, a beautiful day on the ocean! Lunch provided by #3 (Adam)a 25” Big Eye Tuna (caught in the middle of dinner - Beer chicken)turned into fish tacos (thanks to the superb recipe from Rich Jones of the Mighty Valis crew) was a big hit today!! #5 (ryan) has been doing a terrific job with sets, and spinnaker changes, and everyone #4 has been taking video of the trip, and is always in our “face’ with his camera catching all the good (and bad) action aboard Coyote. Just changed from the “shy” kite to the full size kite to keep the racing pace up, time to catch up on our sleep now. #1 signing off for now. Coyote
