Up the minute news and information on the Racing Yacht Coyote and her continuing journeys!
Everything went very well yesterday. We feel we performed well during the last 20 hours. Good wind at the start (22 knots) which stayed with us well out the channel, near the Farallone Islands, before slowly tapering off. During the night we had winds from 4-10, with an occasional increase to 14. Had Connie’s famous steak sandwich for lunch, and home made (yes Connie) turkey pot pies, very good. First night was interesting, with everyone learning boat systems….How to turn on the instrument lights? How to turn on the Tri-Color Light? Radar, AIS„„,hey why is that HUGE ship there, which way should we go when we pass it? Lots of questions (Steve was woken up for each, but finally at 0300 got sound sleep) but they became answered and slowly stopped. We think we are heading for the big wind, and have a small group of boats around us. Tiki J, has hung with us for 17 hours, gaining on us, then we gain on them. Have a few other competitors all around us, as we could see their lights at night as they rose up on waves, just not sure who they are. Looks like we are breathing down Valis’s neck, by check-in we may be able to hand them our position. Everyone did a great job on deck during the night, with wind shifts of 30 degrees at a time, but we followed the shifts, and kept the speed up! Looks like we have traveled 102 miles since our 12:15 start yesterday, and only have 2011 miles to go! Weather is overcast and cold, Connie and Ryan are on watch now (Connie and I are drinking coffee) eating breakfast, and charging the battery, getting ready for daily roll call. Phil, Adam and Stuart are sleeping (and snoring)… Looking forward to a fun and beautiful day. Coyote
